I have been constantly thinking some of the questions: What is art? What is a good art? Why do we make art? Why do we go to see art? I do not think I am old enough or experienced enough to answer these questions like an expert, but I know what art I like when I see them. I went to see the Chinese artist Song Dong’s installation Waste Not at Barbican Art Gallery last Sunday and I think I like it very much. It is Song Dong’s family fair and personal story. It moves me because of the sheer quantities and the commonness of the collections (over 10,000 items over 50 years, some of the soaps are even older than the artist). It is powerful, for me, because they are all daily-life items so we never really pay much attention to except we use and dispose, and how much stuff we have used and disposed without notice over the years. That quantity is installed in front of you. China is moving fast, but whether turning into a Western-style of conumerism society is the ultimate aim of modernisation, I do not know.

This is a shot that I have taken from the window of my London flat. It was a late summer. The sun is setting. If you have been living in London, you know summer London is a special time because the sun sets very late. It will not go down until almost 9 o’clock at night sometimes. It always brings the vibrant, rich, passionate, ever-changing colours of red, orange, hot pink and many colours in between. The Shard, on the left and was still being built so you can only see it coming up slightly; and the Gerkin, on the right, with other tall buildings from the City of London can be seen in one picture here, from distance, as a backdrop of these wonderful colours. So I share it here.
